A CASE STUDY OF ST. FRANCIS UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF HEALTH AND ALLIED SCIENCES

















CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND AND PROBLEM SETTING

1.0 Introduction

This chapter intended to give a brief explanation about SFUCHAS as the background of the study area, background of the problem under study, statement of the problem, both objectives of the study: general and specific objectives, research questions, significance of the study, limitations and scope of the study . The study was looking at “  how organization motivational strategies influence quality service provision in the private sectors.” A case study of St. Francis University College of Health and Allied Sciences (SFUCHAS).

1.1 The History of SFUCHAS

The idea of the establishment of SFUCHAS was the result of decision made by the Tanzania Episcopal Council (TEC), in regard of the need for the contribution of the Catholic Church in providing trainings for more Medical Doctors and other health experts in Tanzania due to the available situation on the shortage availability of qualified experts in the Health Sector.
SAUT Main Campus, in collaboration with Catholic Diocese of Mahenge, Ifakara Parish, together with other three institutions located at Ifakara (SFDDH, TTCIH and IHI), put the basis on the establishment of SFUCHAS. SFUCHAS is the second Medical College which is under the supervision of TEC after the Weill Bugando- Mwanza. This is also the first Medical College to be established within the Small City in the District.
In its fourth meeting which was held in November 2, 2010, TCU provided to SFUCHAS Temporary Certificate of Registration (CPR) number 30.
The first students to be registered at SFUCHAS were from the MD1 (46). Those students came from different parts of Tanzania and from both gender and different denominations. In November 28, 2010, the Holy Eucharistic Mass was conducted by the Honorable Bishop Agapit Ndorobo of the Mahenge Diocese for the Beginning of the Academic Year 2010/2011 and the studies started officially in November 30, 2010.

Ø  To transfer knowledge from one generation to another through teaching, advance and frontier of knowledge through research in Rural Community.

i)                    Doctor of Medicine (MD): 5years
ii)                  Diploma in Pharmaceutical Sciences: 3years
iii)                Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science & Technology: 3years
iv)                Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science & Technology: 2years.................................
